Break Sokos Hotel Levi joins White Winters – sustainability in practice in the Arctic environment
On UN World Environment Day, 5 June, Break Sokos Hotel Levi announces that it has joined the White Winters pioneer programme. The programme brings together tourism and winter-sector actors to develop practical solutions that support sustainable tourism and the future of winter seasons.
Joining the programme is a natural continuation of the long-term sustainability work of Break Sokos Hotel Levi and S Group. The White Winters collaboration highlights practical action, because sustainability is most effective when it is visible, tangible and easy to take part in.
S Group’s sustainability work is guided by the “Act System” approach, in which small and large sustainability actions connect and reinforce one another. These actions support more sustainable consumption, wiser use of natural resources and a fairer society.
In the Arctic environment, every action leaves a trace. That is why Break Sokos Hotel Levi continues to develop its sustainability work together with partners and guests, towards lower-emission and more resource-efficient tourism that better supports biodiversity.
Long-term sustainability work provides a strong foundation
Break Sokos Hotel Levi has systematically developed its sustainability work for many years. The hotel holds both the Green Key certification and the Sustainable Travel Finland label, which guide and verify its commitment to sustainable tourism practices.
Sustainability is visible in everyday operations in many ways: improving energy efficiency, developing recycling and waste-reduction solutions, providing environmental training for staff, and prioritising local partners and services.
Towards the next level
Through White Winters, the hotel will continue to develop its operations and look for new, effective ways to support Arctic nature and responsible tourism.
Sustainability work at the hotel is organised through a dedicated sustainability team. Each department is represented, helping to ensure that shared sustainability goals are embedded in daily operations. The team develops new initiatives, monitors progress and keeps staff actively involved in ongoing development work.
One concrete example of the hotel’s sustainability work is the litter-picking walks organised in Levi’s fell landscape, where guests and local residents can also take part. On World Environment Day, 5 June, the organised litter-picking walk offers an easy way to do good for the local environment.
– We want to continuously develop our operations and find new ways to act more responsibly. Sustainability is not a separate project for us, but part of our everyday work. It is important that both staff and guests can participate in concrete actions for nature, says Hotel Director Hilkka Lehtinen.
For Lehtinen, sustainability is also personally important.
– Levi is a place where nature is always present and everyday life can breathe. That is why it is important for me that we do not stand still, but continuously develop our operations and seek better solutions together with our staff and partners.
White Winters turns pioneering ideas into practice
The White Winters programme aims to bring sustainability into everyday choices and actions. It brings together actors who are willing to test, develop and implement solutions that strengthen the sustainable future of winter tourism and winter sports.
– It is great to welcome Break Sokos Hotel Levi, which already has a strong foundation of long-term sustainability work. When this expertise is combined with the White Winters network, new solutions emerge that can accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices and make sustainability more visible in everyday tourism, says White Winters Programme Director Santtu Hulkkonen.
The White Winters programme aims to accelerate the adoption of climate- and nature-positive solutions and increase understanding of how winter sports and tourism can move towards a more sustainable future through practical action.
